Unfortunately, Cosworth head gasket failure is not uncommon, and is more likely on a tuned engine. We have replaced a great number over the years, and know exactly what is needed for a successful repair.
It is important that the cylinder head face is re-machined. Over time this can distort, and if it were not completely flat, the replaced gasket would quickly fail again.
Another potential problem is for the cylinder head face to soften (due to overheating), and the gasket to ‘sink’ into the cylinder head face. If this happens the gasket seal is quickly lost due to the reduced clamping force. Generally re-facing is sufficient to reclaim the cylinder head, but sometimes a replacement casting is needed.
Also, if insufficient anti-freeze additive is used in the coolant, this can result in excessive corrosion of the cylinder head, causing head gasket failure, and possibly damaging the casting beyond repair. It is therefore essential to ensure that correct concentrations of anti-freeze are used at all times.
We generally use the competition standard, YBO 611 Group A Head Gasket even on totally standard engines. (Higher specification gaskets can be used if so desired).
We usually complete this work in three working days.
