Camshaft Oil Seal Replacement
Camshaft oil seal failure is not uncommon on the five cylinder Focus ST engine. When this happens engine oil will leak down the front of the engine and also contaminate the timing belt. As this whole assembly is enclosed in covers, the problem may not become immediately obvious.
Oil contamination will seriously weaken the timing belt, so it is essential to replace this at the same time as replacing the oil seals. As a matter of good practice we also change the timing belt tensioner whenever changing the timing belt as should this fail at any time, the result is the same as a timing belt failure - catastrophic engine damage! We also now use the stronger Focus RS Timing Belt and tensioner on the Focus ST. Plus, as the retaining screws for the camshaft position sensors are easily damaged we will always replace these.

Replacing the camshaft oil seals requires the timing belt sprockets to be removed. It is essential that they are refitted exactly in the correct position to ensure that the valve timing is correct. If not, the best that can happen is that the engine will not perform as well as it should. the worse case scenario is that incorrect valve timing could lead to valves hitting pistons which would again lead to a catastrophic engine failure.

We have invested in the necessary camshaft locking and alignment tools to guarantee that the valve timing is set exactly to the manufacturers specifications, ensuring perfect valve timing.
